DIY Hair Detangler

2:55 PM Verginia Smith 0 Comments

Hello friends! Today’s post is for all of you who have kids, particularly girls. My sweet girls both have long-ish hair that gets tangled when we wash it during bath time and would cringe as we brushed their hair after bath. And don’t even get me started on the crazy bed head they wake up with–talk about knots. So, we started using detangler. But I quickly became sick and tired of buying expensive

When To Prep Before Chalk Paint

10:30 AM Verginia Smith 0 Comments

We get a lot of questions from people new to chalk paint who want to know if it truly is a no-prep paint. And the answer is yes and no. Chalk paint adheres to furniture beautifully without the use of primer and (usually) no sanding. A quick cleaning is typically all you need. With that being said, there’s very rarely a piece of furniture that goes through our shop that doesn’t need some type of prep work before paint. Because when you’re working with used furniture, it’s typically been loved on for quite a few years.

a foyer “before” and “after”

10:24 AM Verginia Smith 0 Comments

My sister and I have a lot of little things in common – we both have an embarrassing love of the Bachelor/Bachelorette, think that nothing beats McDonald’s Coke, and…. we’re both decorating slow-pokes. When we decide to decorate a room, it’s something that comes together over months (sometimes years) rather than days or weeks. Such was the case for my sister’s foyer – over two years ago I blogged about some beautiful options for chests for her foyer that she was starting to decorate

DIY Wood Framed Mirror

10:23 AM Verginia Smith 0 Comments

Lately, I’ve found the need for a full length mirror in our bathroom. I’m always getting dressed, wondering how it all looks “put together”, so I finally decided it was time to change that thought process. Our master bathroom itself needs a bit of work… it’s still painted that bright blue, and I am so extremely sick of it. I think this may be the project that finally pushes me to take action and make changes as I’m inspired.

How to Clean Your Home in 15 Minutes

There are so many wonderful things about the holidays. I enjoy spending time with family, baking Christmas goodies and just savouring the magic of the season. This year I imagine will be even more hectic than the last few Christmas seasons. I’m back in my hometown close to friends and family and am expecting my days to be full as I connect with loved ones I haven’t seen in years. It’s all good, but there is an element of stress with the frenzy. For starters, I need to keep on top of housework in case unexpected guests pop over for a quick visit. I just know that will happen and do not want them to get the wrong first impression and think we are a family of slobs!

DIY - Refill air freshners. NOTE: There is a definite "OMG" factor that I will forever associate with plug-in oils now.. I will NEVER buy one again, other than for the purpose of refilling!!

8:55 AM Verginia Smith 0 Comments

i’m about to get hippie on you all. plugin air fresheners (and tons of other stuff) have something called VOC in them. VOC stands for “volatile organic compounds” and they are highly toxic. they are chemicals with a low boiling point. VOC cause all sorts of problems in your body: infertility (some of you may like that!), headaches, nervous system disorders, memory loss and cancer for both your pet and you…. lots of things.

Water Bottle Wind Spirals

7:16 AM Verginia Smith 0 Comments

In my daycare, the hooligans and I love to make homemade yard ornaments using found or recycled materials. We’ve made dozens of simple wind chimes and whirligigs over the years and I think this project is one of my favourites yet! For environmental reasons, I'm not a big fan of bottled water—but we recently hosted a backyard BBQ and while cleaning up, I collected about a dozen empty water bottles. Instead of tossing them in the trash, I decided we would use them to create colourful water bottle wind spirals to hang in our outdoor play space. I’m just thrilled with the way they turned out! I love the way they bounce and bob in the wind. The sunlight shining through the bands of colour looks so lovely.

The Secret to Flatter Abs & Smaller Waist

3:45 PM Verginia Smith 0 Comments

There is much more to getting a flat belly than doing 100 crunches a day. One area of your abs you might be neglecting is the Transversus Abdominis muscle, also known as the “corset muscle”. This is the muscle that tightens when you cough, sneeze, or laugh. In addition to regular cardio and eating clean, working these deep abdominal muscles will help pull in your waistline like a natural corset and flatten your stomach. You will also notice that your posture will improve and your lower back strengthened.
